He was better known as Oom Schalk by many in the Community Advice Office Sector. In his capacity as Manager of the Association of University Legal Aid Institutions Trust (AULAI Trust) he shared his vast wealth of experience accumulated over years across the country mentoring generations of Paralegals from Community Advice Offices (CAOs).
FHR will remember his consistent contribution to paralegal institutions, the sustainability of the CAOs and improvement of the services they render to disadvantaged and vulnerable communities. The CAO sector and community at large has lost one of its key members who was a fountain of wisdom, that the sector greatly needs for the push in realization of socio-economic rights and access to justice for all. In the midst of current COVID 19 pandemic his departure will be greatly felt, especially at a time when inequality and poverty is ravaging the poor and disempowered.
Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends. He might be gone from our sight, but never from our hearts.
